Max’s first interaction with Alexa
When it comes to technology in our home, Mr. Ice Cream is always jumping on the latest bandwagon to make our home even “smarter.” Before we got our first Amazon Echo, I wasn’t sure how often I would use the voice-activated speaker, but now, I can barely remember how I lived without it. I’m constantly asking Alexa to set a timer, dim the lights, play ____ song or how tall a certain celebrity is (I’m obsessed with knowing the heights of famous people!). Here are our five favorite Alexa features/skills.
1. Create Smart Home Groups
If you have multiple Echos or Dots you can create smart home groups so they act together. For example, our downstairs devices are grouped, so if we want NPR to play on all of them we simply say,
Alexa, play NPR downstairs
The audio plays perfectly in sync across devices and provides a seamless surround sound effect. Each device can still be used individually but grouping allows the option for multi-room sound. It is especially helpful if you spend a lot of time walking your baby around your house in a carrier.
Set up groups from the Alexa App:
2. Use your Echo/Dot to Drop in
Within your home, you can use one Alexa-enabled device to call another one. When I first learned about the “drop in” feature, I brushed it off as something I would never use. Turns out it comes in handy once in a while. Don’t worry, the feature has to be enabled and Alexa glows green if someone is “dropping in.” All you have to say is,
Alexa, drop in on the nursery Echo
3. Personalize a bedtime story
Alexa can personalize a bedtime story with the short bedtime story skill. If there are any stories you don’t want to hear, or don’t like, you can disable them through the Bedtime website. The stories are short and your little one will get a kick out of hearing Alexa say their name.
Alexa, tell BedTime story to Max.
Enable Skills from the Alexa App:
- Go to Skills in the Alexa App
- Search for your skill
- Enable it.
4. Create easy to pronounce Spotify playlists
For the past couple months we have gotten used to Max belting out Alexa commands. What we aren’t used to, however, is Alexa responding to him. For a while every time he said “Alexa, play Thomas theme song,” Celine Dion would come on (not sure why). To help him out, we created Spotify playlists with easy to pronounce names like “Thomas,” so now he can turn on his favorite tunes by saying,
Alexa, play Thomas
5. Task specific timers
Max doesn’t always listen to us when it’s time to take a bath, put his toys away, go to school, etc., but he almost always listens to Alexa. For the past couple months, we have been using Alexa to set task specific timers and Max responds amazingly well. He understands that when it goes off, that means he has to stop what he is doing. We are always shocked that he actually puts his iPad away when the timer goes off. We’ve even set a “Grumpy” timer!
Alexa, set Max’s iPad timer to 5 minutes.
What are some of your favorite Alexa features/skills? On a side note, if you want a decorative way to hide your dot, I love this adorable owl!

E (5) asks Alexa what the weather is every day to determine which coat he needs to put on. He’s also currently obsessed with math problems, so we get him to ask Alexa what 253 + 629 is after we’re tired of solving them with him.

Have you tried “Alexa open the magic door”? My kids love it. Alexa guides them on a little adventure with choices along the way. Very similar to those “Choose your own adventure” books.

@JCCovi: I haven’t tried that yet, but I love “choose your own adventure” type games. I will definitely check it out! Thanks

The best thing we’ve done recently is getting a Harmony for the TV so now we can say “Alexa, turn off the TV” from the kitchen or anywhere when its time for dinner or just to be done with TV.

@JCCovi: that’s a cool idea!
We play Jeopardy and my 5 year old hates it when I get questions wrong.
I use it mostly for timers and to turn my bedroom lights on and off.
Also, when I’m traveling, best thing is being able to “drop in” on the house so if my husband doesn’t have his phone on him, I can still reach them.

@JennyPenny: we have the harmony remote too, and I love that feature! You can even program it to turn on specific channels.

@mediagirl: I’ve used the drop in feature under the same circumstance, because I’ve found that when my husband is with the two kids he almost never hears his phone, but he always hears Alexa!

This post inspired me to think outside the box with our Alexa! I realized this weekend you can ask her to play white noise, which eliminated my need to buy an extra white noise machine for our bedroom where our baby often naps in his pack and play!

@Mrs. Peas: we have a dot in our nursery for the sole purpose of playing white noise at night! It’s great!

The girls ask Alexa to tell us knock knock jokes. She also beat boxes for us. We use the timer a lot and the weather everyday. We try to ask Alexa for information about certain animals but she hasn’t impressed us too much with that feature. Maybe I need to add an app or something. Anyway, Lil’ Pizza is currently talking to Alexa after we “opened the magic door!” I am definitely going to play around with Alexa for more ideas.

Oh my gosh, we pretty much play music and Jeopardy. Clearly we need to step up our Alexa game!
