The rhythm and rhyme of children’s books is the soundtrack to my days with little ones. Hearing my toddler repeat phrases with the story, and watching my older kiddo create silly rhymes are my favorite memories to make. We have shelves of book we inherited from family members or found on hunts through Goodwill. Here are some of our favorite children’s books to read with rhythm or rhyme.
Little Goblins Ten by Pamela Jane – With Halloween coming up, this counting book of goblins, witches, dragons, and mummies is well-loved in our house.
Go Dogs Go! Dr. Seuss by P.D. Eastman – Hearing my kiddos shout “Go, dogs go!” at the beginning of the story makes me laugh every time. There are so many fun Dr. Seuss books to choose from, but this is one of our favorites.
Oh My Gosh, Mrs. McNosh by Sarah Weeks – This is another silly, short story for dog lovers.
Somewhere in the Ocean by Jennifer Ward – This author writes sweet stories about nature. The illustrations are beautiful, and there are some hidden images in the picture, which I didn’t realize until the kids found them.
The Day the Goose Got Loose by Reeve Lindebergh – This is a quirky, fun story with a catchy phrase my kids love to say.
The Lady with the Alligator Purse by Nadine Bernard Westcott – A silly, short story, perfect for a toddler.
B is for Bulldozer by June Sobel – A rhyming alphabet book about trucks and tools is currently our little guy’s favorite.
Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker – A great bedtime story with rhyme, and of course trucks for our little guy.
Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson (The Bear Books) – This author has several stories about a bear and his friends. They’re cute and have a fun rhythm.
How Do Dinosaurs Play with Their Friends? By Jane Yolen – Great illustrations and a theme around manners and good behavior. Add in rhyme, and you have books toddlers and preschoolers love.
No Matter What by Debi Gliori – The story of little one asking their mamma if she will love them no matter what. I always snuggle my kiddos close when reading this one, just can’t help it.
. . . . .
With so many well written children’s books, it’s hard to choose favorites. But these books will always have a place on our shelves. Which rhythm or rhyme story books do your little ones’ love?

I have to recommend “Crybaby” by Karen Beaumont. Such a great rythm and rhyme book. Love the story and the ending!

Bear Snores On is so great! There are other Bear related books (a Christmas one and Bear stays Awake), but I think Bear Snores On is the best of the series).
