We’re not necessarily the “greenest” family on the block – three young kids and two busy careers means we often have to choose convenience over conservation. However, we try our best where we can. One simple “fix” for us has been to vastly eliminate the number of paper towels we go through.
For cleaning the house we use old wash cloths or towels, something I assume many people also do. For wiping all of the messy faces and sticky fingers at meals we have a stash of reusable paper towels. I purchased my supply from the Etsy shop generationME.
These “paper towels” are super soft cotton, and perfect for sensitive baby cheeks. And because they look different from any other washcloth or towel in our house they do not get misplaced when the laundry gets folded (often the twins’ nanny will fold the laundry and this ensures kitchen washcloths won’t get mixed up with bath washcloths).
I love that we’re not going through endless amounts of paper towels during meals! It really is such a waste, and because we do so much laundry we are able to regularly wash these cloths. However, I did recently decide that the set of 12 we started with just isn’t enough for three children so I purchased an additional set of 12.
Now, you may be asking yourself, “This is great, but do you just have dirty cloths piling up in your kitchen?” Nope. There’s also a solution for that. We have a “wet bag” of sorts that hangs from our freezer drawer where we place the dirty cloths and bibs.
Unfortunately the Etsy shop I purchased this bag from, Paisley Home Studio, seems to have closed. If you search Etsy for “kitchen wet bag” you will find plenty of options for waterproof bags to hang in your kitchen. Since we do laundry every 2-3 days, we simply throw the contents from the bag into the laundry. About once a week we will also wash the bag.
The cloths and the wet bag are both accessible to Miss H so she can grab a cloth to wipe her sticky fingers and she knows to throw it in the bag when she’s done.
This is such a simple and inexpensive change, but a perfect opportunity to keep the paper towels on the roll and out of the garbage!
What changes have you made around your home to help you be a little bit “greener”?

Such a fab idea I’ll have to start doing this not sure why I not thought of this before.

Big thumbs up on the kitchen wet bag and where you’ve hung it….we use a lot more cloth than we do paper but I am always struggling with where to actually put the used ones until wash day.

we did this too but bought a ton off amazon, and it has saved so much in waste and money!

I’m sending this to my DH because I’ve wanted to do this for years. He is the greatest fan of the paper towel and he doesn’t ask for much.

Love this! I had just posted a few days ago asking if anyone made their own wipes! I noticed lately too we’re just going through rolls and rolls of paper towel and packs and packs of wipes due to BLW, so I was on the hunt for more eco friendly options. So this post totally came at the right time for me

ugh we’re so bad with paper towels, this was very motivational, thanks for the product recommendation and inspiration!

I’d love to do this, we seem to use so many paper towels! I’ve been trying to use dish towels instead for some stuff, but maybe this would be better. Thanks for the inspiration and the links!

How do these handle repeated uses on food cleanup and washing in terms of odors? We use baby wash cloths to clean up our kids after meal time, and even when I use bleach in the wash cycle, they still get a permanent icky odor over time. Wondering if you have any suggestions on this based on your use of the ‘reusable paper towels’ here. Thanks!

Love the kitchen wet bag!! We use cloth napkins and could use a spot for them when they’re dirty… we do use paper towels although I try not to use too many. I like the idea of DD being able to get her own cloth wipes and put them away herself.

we started this years ago with fabric napkins and using the kids washcloths from ikea for rags. we just have a plastic bin under the sink to throw them all into!

@Erica: We’ve never had any problem with these retaining any smell. We just wash them with the same detergent we use for the kids’ clothes (Honest Company). One of my twins has really sensitive skin so I keep the same wash routine with these as they touch his face and hands!
I’m so happy to hear that I’ve inspired some of you to make a switch and cut back on some paper towels, and it’s also fun to hear that many of you already do this!

I love using reusable paper towels! I’ve been using them for 1.5 years and they are still going strong! I got ours from a different easy shop:

We recently switched to cloth napkins, and now we don’t go through paper towels like crazy anymore. Such a small change, but makes me happy to cut on the waste. It barely adds to our laundry too!

We also use towels for the kids during meals. I bought a bunch of Gerber baby towels from BRUs a while back and it has worked great. I hang both towels on hooks in the kitchen and we just wash with dish soap (unscented) after every meal and hang them back up to dry. And when the laundry gets done it gets tossed in and we pull out another set. They are small and thin so dry pretty quickly. Now… our elderly dog (14.5) is constantly having “accidents” all over the floor now so we’ve been using more paper towel for her than normal. :\ One time she peed in my shower so I just rinsed it into the drain. If only she just goes there all the time?

We’ve been using these “cleanup cloths” as we call them for years. I love the idea of the wetbag being accessible though. I just toss the cloths straight in the washer but it would be great if my toddler could do it herself.
