Charlie and Olive are Lego obsessed! Their other toys don’t get nearly as much play now, so we recently sold their play kitchen and all their trains and tracks. Legos are the number 1 toy when kids come over for playdates!

We’ve had the basic square/rectangle Legos since Charlie was a baby, but they never got as much play as our Melissa and Doug wooden blocks and our Magnatiles. Then for his 5th birthday Charlie received mostly themed Lego sets as gifts, which took Legos to a whole new level. Olive became obsessed with the little pieces, but they were too hard for her to put together, so we bought her a couple of Duplo sets (Legos for the younger set). Having these themed sets has absolutely fueled their passion for Legos and ramped up their imaginative play! My only regret is not getting on the Duplo train when they were younger because they’re really great for kids 2+.

There are so many different themed sets, though most of them are geared more towards boys. And with the success of The Lego Movie, it seems that Legos are more popular than ever. Even many dads we know are really into building them — the ones for kids 6+ are not that easy to build!

Introduction-to-Lego-Duplo

1) ice cream – I don’t know a kid that doesn’t like playing ice cream, and this set is fun for kids of all ages! Olive took it to show and tell and her teacher told me that it was the hit of the day.

2) Disney Princess Collection – This was a gift from Grandma and features Snow White, Cinderella and Ariel. Is it just me or are Disney Princesses everywhere now?

3) Cafe – The kids love  to “cook” for us, so this is a fun little set that also includes a family.

4) Duplo World People Set – This one is a little pricey, but having little people to play with takes Legos to another level. Also fights would break out on play dates over the people. Now we have plenty to go around!

5) My First Playhouse – This set is fun because it has windows that open.

6) Building Plate – These are a must have for the Lego lover in your life. The kids build entire towns onto the plates.

7) Animals – Great for the animal lover in your life!

8) Lego Friend’s Olivia’s Ice Cream Bike – This set is actually for kids 5+, but Olive is obsessed with the smaller Legos that Charlie has so I wanted to get her one small set as well. She adores this one because it has so many fun parts including ice cream, popsicles, and a bike. Olive has never really put things in her mouth so we don’t worry about the small pieces, but that’s definitely something to keep in mind if you’re considering purchasing something like this.

Megabloks also has mini play sets featuring Barbie, Hello Kitty, Despicable Me, Hot Wheels, Spongebob, etc. We purchased a tiny one of these sets at a local toy store and they’re pretty identical to the Lego sets.

9) Duplo Basic Bricks – Finally you can purchase a basic set of bricks, but Charlie and Olive just mix and match with the existing sets we have above and it’s plenty of Legos for them.
