Oh, gender reveals, how I love thee. There’s so much excitement surrounding the sex of a baby, and I was really excited to celebrate with my family.

Our anatomy scan was wonderful. I hadn’t seen the baby since it looked like a wee little grain of rice, so seeing an actual baby was a sight for my eyes, and I totally cried. My husband was actually able to FaceTime with me at just the right moment when the ultrasound technician saw what she needed to see, so we got to find out together. Having him “there” with me was the next best thing to, well, having him actually be there with me.

Since I was going home a few days after the scan, I knew I wanted to reveal the surprise to our families at the same time. It’s not often that we’ll get to celebrate and have fun with things like this, so I was pretty excited to make it happen.

The first step was easy: make sure my family was available on the day I picked and make a reservation at a restaurant.

My second step was finding a baker. I knew I wanted to do a cake reveal (because, hello: cake!), but finding someone to bake the cake was harder than I thought. There were a few places in town with a reputation for delicious cakes, but after digging around I discovered one of them didn’t have a great track record with gender reveals (people would cut into the cake and it was white inside—uh, oh!). I ended up finding a smaller baker called Bittersweets Bakery in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and I knew it was the one after the owner picked up the phone.

I explained that I was calling from a completely different state, wanted to order a gender reveal cake, and pick it up a week later when I was in town. My original call was a few days before the anatomy scan to secure the date and to talk to her about the bigger details about the cake: size, shape, outside color, design, etc., and I told her I’d call back after my anatomy scan to spill the beans and tell her what color to make the inside. After we talked on the phone, I sent her an email with pictures of what I’d like the outside and inside of the cake to look like.

Then the day came when we found out if we were filling it with pink or blue, so I called her and shared my secret.

Fast forward a few days to when I picked up the cake and met up with my family for dinner. The outside decoration was gorgeous and exactly what we talked about, and I was so excited to cut into it—keeping that secret was hard! Cake is usually served at the end of the meal, but I just couldn’t wait. After everyone ordered, I announced that it was time!

I had everyone write down on their place mats whether they thought it would be pink or blue. (Everyone but one person said, “blue.”) So what’s inside? Pink or blue? Here’s a video of the big reveal:

It’s…..A……

Color me surprised! Practically everyone thought it would be a boy, so naturally, I started leaning that way, too! But a girl? Another girl?!! AHHHHH!!!! We’re SO. Stinking. EXCITED!

Here are some close-ups of the cake, because I think it was perfect and just the way I wanted it to look. I mean, you can’t go wrong with the gorgeous ombre blend…especially when it’s pink!

So, there you have it! Baby number two is (hopefully, if the technician saw right) a GIRL! Now I’m off to go buy more bows, dresses, and all things pink.
