Yup…only a month late with this post.

Why hello there, cutie pie!

Sleep

Woo hoo! We sleep trained this month and it has been WONDERFUL. Well, the actual training part was miserable, but the results are amazing. The Trikester now sleeps in his crib at night, and although I still bounce him on the exercise ball for a few minutes to help him relax, he goes into bed drowsy but awake, and usually falls asleep in minutes without crying. The exception is when he’s overtired – those nights are a disaster and we try really hard to stick to his routine, though we’re less successful on weekends. Bedtime this month was around 8:30PM, with a wake-up to eat at 4:00 AM, and then up for the day by 6:15 AM. He took 3-4 naps a day, and typically sleeps for a total of 3 hours.

Food

The Trikester continued to explore new foods during the month, though his nutrition is mostly just coming from breast milk. Some days he gets a meal of solids, and some days we skip it, especially if we’re short on time. His palate doesn’t discriminate, and he’ll eat almost anything, especially if it’s doused in lemon juice and/or garlic (that’s weird, right?). I wish his meals were a neater process – he now dines shirtless, but it’s still a lot of work to clean up afterwards.

Oatmeal and Green beans — yum! This was before I became a fan of naked meals.

Disposition

I went a little batty this month trying to keep the Trikester entertained. Although he’s gotten happier, he’s still not an “easy” baby as Grandma Tricycle observed during a recent visit. Independent play is not his strong suit, and he grows fussy easily when he gets bored. He’s very observant, so although he doesn’t “play” well, if we’re out and about in a new environment, he’s more than content to check out his surroundings.

His smiles are oh so sweet.

Milestones

The Trikester could attend a sit-in and protest like a champ – he’s very stable and rarely tips over, though we did have some rough head bangs at the beginning of the month. He’s almost able to obtain a sitting position on his own, but he’s not quite there yet. There’s lots of rolling, but no crawling. He loves to bounce when we hold him up, and if he has something to lean on, he can stand independently. He also knows his name, so it’s been fun to call him and watch him respond. He likes to play peekaboo, and we have fun throwing a towel over his head and then pulling it off. He’s also into forts – Daddy builds him a “bunker” out of pillows and he peeks out and grins every time he sees us.

When I’m not actively entertaining him, he gets in all kind of trouble – though he was happy to sit in the laundry basket (far right) for a while without me.

Adventures

The baby got in a pool for the first time this month. He LOVES it. If he’s fussy or having a bad day, I know a half hour in the community pool, no matter how cold the water, will make him happier. Because the baby is less fussy when there’s a lot going on, we’ve headed out on the town more often – we ate a lot of meals out, checked out an ethnic festival, and headed to SIL Tricycle’s high school graduation. We’ve also had friends over for dinner almost every weekend — the Trikester loves to play with new people – no sign of stranger anxiety here!

Yippie! The Trikester loves the water! I know he’s not smiling in these, but trust me, he couldn’t be happier anywhere else.

It’s been awesome to watch him grow and change this month. Our biggest challenge has been the complete lack of independent play. Any suggestions? When was your baby able to amuse themselves for five or ten minutes?
