Last week, I had a pretty big mommy fail. Lil’ CB, who has been fully potty-trained for almost 9 months, had an accident — only the 3rd pee accident he’s ever had since those first 3 days. And it was TOTALLY my fault.
You see, my little boy, who is eager to grow in his independence, headed to the bathroom by himself while we were at a Christmas party. He does this all the time at home and knew where the bathroom was at his friend’s house, so it didn’t seem like it would be an issue. In fact, I didn’t even realize Lil’ CB had headed to the bathroom until I heard him frantically shouting, “Mommy! Mommy! Come fast!!!” I rushed into the bathroom and found Lil’ CB in tears saying, “I had an accident, Mommy! I peed in my pants…” He was so sad…and *I* was so sad when I realized that the reason he peed in his pants was because he couldn’t get his skinny jeans off by himself.
Sigh.
Back when we initially potty trained, I relented and kept Lil’ CB in elastic-waist pants and shorts to help the process go more smoothly. Normally, I’m not a huge fan of little boys in sweatpants and basketball shorts all day, every day. And I know there’s probably only a small window of time before that’s all Lil’ CB wants to wear! So, once the cooler autumn weather rolled in, we were back to skinny jeans and cords for Lil’ CB…
He has been really great about getting his pants off and back on by himself and asks for help if/when he needs it. And never once has he complained about the clothes I put him in (secretly, I think he likes them ;)…despite how miserable he might look in that picture!).
I guess this time he had just held out for too long and the jeans were just too skinny. And after seeing his face last week, I’ll most likely retire that pair.
We won’t be abandoning button and zipper pants altogether, but we’ll be leaning a little more heavily on elastic-waist pants. And while little girls definitely have a leg up (haha) in this department with all the variations of adorable leggings that are available to them, take heart, moms of boys, because we aren’t just limited to sweatpants — hurrah!
We have this pair of cargo pants from the Gap that we bought early in the Fall and we also have these elastic-waist skinny cargos from Korea that are a pretty close second to Lil’ CB’s now-retired skinny jeans.
(Not sure why he’s standing on his tippy toes!)
I don’t plan on buying any more pants until Lil’ CB is ready for the next size up (his old skinnies are actually 18-24 months…and yes, I do still feel terrible about the whole incident!), so we will have throw sweatpants into the mix more frequently. But, when Lil’ CB is ready for new, bigger pants, you can bet we’ll be looking into these very cute, non-sweatpants elastic-waist pants!
1) Gap; 2) Zara; 3) Zara; 4) H&M;
And when we do get to the point where all Lil’ CB wants to wear are sweatpants, I might be okay with it if they’re as cute as these:
I said *might*.

I totally know how you feel– in fact my story is probably worse. I let a child I was taking care of go to the park in skinny jeans and she was climbing on the play structure (one we went to several times a week) and she didn’t have enough range of motion in her pants to climb and she fell off. It was awful. Thankfully, she was fine but it still scared both of us beyond belief.
They are so cute though! I have simply limited them to activities where climbing isn’t on the agenda…

ooh I love those jean-looking ones (jeggings for boys?!??!) from zara!!!
We had a similar incident… SO sad because they really, really try and they get so embarrassed at accidents now. Shameful mommy fail group hug
Another similar incident that’s too funny not to mention… Wagon Jr. was trying to put on his underpants by himself, got both legs into one leg hole and started crying. Traumatic!!!

Aw, poor CB!!! I guess I’m not into fashion, I just don’t understand the skinny jean thing. I had a pair of skinny jeans gifted to our daughter and was annoyed with how hard it was to get them on her….she wore them once and I threw them in the donate pile!!
The Gap pants top left are nice looking pants! I must say, those sweatpants sure do look comfy…

Ha, aw. We go with the happy-medium pants, generally. But I like to put him in either normal or roomy jeans.
We’ve had our own fashion fails, including putting him in girl’s clothes we didn’t realize were for girls until we looked a little closer … he’s also walked around with his shoes on the wrong feet a lot, and slept all night with both legs in one PJ pant leg because I didn’t realize I did shimmied him in that way, and he didn’t complain!

I’m just getting ready to potty train my DS, but he doesn’t like jeans AT ALL, so he already almost exclusively wears elastic waist pants. Luckily for him I don’t care to much about fashion, so he already wears sweat pants from time to time
But mostly he wears fleece or cargo type pants with elastic waists.

Aww poor little guy. And poor you! DS is still in diapers so I don’t know what I will do. Hopefully I will remember this when we get there.

I am with @mediagirl: I guess I’m not big into fashion. The skinny jeans never worked for my kids. I had one pair and all three boys hated it. They were do hard to put in even I couldn’t stand it. With four kids to get ready I didn’t have to time to wrestle wiggly boys into tight pants. Now my boys rarely let me put them in anything but elastic waisted clothes so they can do it themselves. I don’t mind though. I have some cargo, jean and dress pants that have at least a little elastic

Aaaw…poor little guy. I feel for him! I never thought about skinny jeans being so tight. Good thing I retired my son’s b/c it was getting too short. I did find it hard pulling it up, but he never complained about it when he went to the restroom. Hmm…then again my son takes his pants and undies off when he goes at home. He’ll even come back butt naked (seriously so cute and annoying at the same time!) out to ask me to turn the outside in b/c he doesn’t know how to flip it back. I bought some H&M skinny pants and they are looser and he hasn’t had trouble getting them on or off. I need to check out Zara kids one of these days. I just found out one of the malls in our area has it. It’s further but worth driving there to see their selection.

Skinny jeans look so uncomfortable to me! I don’t think I’ll be big on jeans in general though just because I don’t wear them too much for comfort’s sake. I like the look of the elastic waist pants you posted!

Okay, this is probably the silliest question ever, but I only had younger sisters and never babysat any recently potty-trained boys… When do they start standing when they pee? At that point they only have to unzip right? I don’t know if I’m having a boy or a girl, but man oh man, boy-parts are confusing.

Poor little guy! I guess he is learning early that fashion can be difficult…

We made it without any accidents due to clothing choices, but that’s because I quickly realized that newly potty trained + skinny jeans just won’t work. Maybe when he’s 5?

@Cole: yikes! the price we pay for fashion, i tell ya! once, i ripped my own skinny jeans while climbing with lil’ CB at the playground. we went home right after that.

@mrs. wagon: they’re actually herringbone! even cuter!
and yes, that underwear thing is tricky, dude. poor guy!
@Mrs. Yoyo: heehee! 2 legs in one leg = bottom half swaddle, no?
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
@kirstkat: not a silly question! i think it depends on the kiddo. lil’ CB is quite small, so he started standing right around 3 when he could “reach” while on tippy toes. other friends we know had their boys standing earlier because they were tall enough!

@erwoo: haha, ” so cute and annoying at the same time!”
wanna know a secret? a friend’s husband, who is a grown man, *still* does that. crazy!
and so jealous of your zara close by!

@Mrs. Cowgirl: LOL! I can’t believe he doesn’t know how to flip his own pants the right way!
I JUST found out about the Zara kids. There’s Zara in DC (Georgetown) but it’s a little drive for me and with two kids forget it! But that one doesn’t have kids. Only the one in MD has it and that’s a little bit closer, sort of.

@erwoo: um. i meant that he *still* TAKES OFF HIS UNDERWEAR AND PANTS to go to the bathroom!!!! hahahaha! his wife is super embarrassed about it. and i promise, his wife is not me
which mall in MD has zara kids?? we sometimes trek to the georgetown one when we’re in that area, but its a pain to get to and like you said, they don’t have kids clothes!
if a mall in montgomery county has a zara kids, it might be worth the trip for me!
pomegranate / 3053 posts
@Mrs. Cowgirl: Hahaha! I figured that’s what he did and didn’t need help putting it on. And it’s Montgomery Mall! I actually looked it up on their website the other week and thought about going over the holidays but never got around to it. I can’t wait to check it out. I like to see clothes in person.

aw poor mama. i have always loved the idea of kids in skinny jeans but i fear i need to wait until Baby O is a little older and leans out a bit. her (ahem) thighs aren’t quite the type for skinny jeans! but then you got me thinking…maybe a little older isn’t better due to potty training. skinnies with elastic waist bands perhaps??

I’m a slave to tiny fashion too, and I’ve often found myself hating a choice I made that looks awesome for it’s lack of practicality.

my DD refuses to wear skinny jeans, even if they are pink or purple, her favorite colors! But you are right, there are so many more choices for girls that we don’t suffer for it. These days they are making skinny jeans that look like jeans, but are super stretchy. Wonder if they make any of those for boys? I wish there were pants with a faux button fly that are actually elastic as they get older!

aww poor cb. this could totally happen to charlie since he wears skinny jeans!
pomegranate / 3503 posts
Poor guy. I think this might’ve happened with my son at school. It prompted his teacher to request that he go to school in pants that are easier for him to pull on and off. He still wears jeans and some are skinny jeans. Luckily, my son is a skinny little thing and his skinny jeans fit loose on him. I make sure that all his pants have some sort of elastic on them so he can pull on and off.

I had some “POOR CB” comment all ready to go (and I really do mean that… poor guy!) but then I read your comment about ripping *your* pants on the playground equipment and am now laughing and can’t remember. (I’m laughing WITH you friend, with you!) I can totally see that going down in my mind.
We love the Cherokee like at Target for this reason… many of their cargos are completely elastic waistbands. Still stylish, yet easy to get down when in a hurry! (Children’s Place has a similar style, but the sizing doesn’t work for S there.)
