In a previous post, I talked about my dream registry and the items I would’ve wanted had I been given the chance to “do over” my original registry. That ultimate baby registry stemmed from a few of my own regrets when I initially registered. Granted, we all know every baby is so different and what didn’t work for Baby HH might be a mommy’s dream come true for you!
Without further ado, I present you My Biggest Registry Regrets:
1. Beaba Multiportion Freezer Tray – this is my least favorite registry item of all! It was so expensive ($25) and I didn’t even use it. I recommend you save your money and get ice cube trays with lids! There are so many cheaper alternatives for food storage out there, I do not recommend this impractically shaped freezer tray.
2. Summer Infant Tiny Diner – I saw this on someone else’s registry and thought it was a cute idea for when it was time for solids. It was a total waste of money on us. It’s made out of plastic and has suction cups to help it stick to restaurant tables. The concept sounded great! Who wants their baby to eat off dirty restaurant tables? However, I have yet to go to a restaurant with tables that works with these suctions. There have been times where I thought I got the suction to stick only to have it pop up into my daughter’s face. I imagine it would have to be a glass top table for this to work. If it’s wood or that material most fast food restaurants have, this isn’t going to fly.
3. Kiddopotamus Snuzzler – I thought this would give my newborn more overall support in addition to what was provided in the carseat (we had the Graco Snugride 35), but she hated it! She was sleeping fine in the carseat, and then after I inserted this she would scream and scream as if begging to get out. I think she just really didn’t like being that confined.*
4. Floppy Shopping Cart Seat Cover – when I was pregnant, I saw so many mom’s with shopping seat covers, that I thought they were a must-have. Little did I know that Baby HH could’ve cared less whether she was in a hard cart or plush cover. She was having too much fun sitting in a rolling cart and playing with everything in the store. Plus, where I live… every supermarket and retail shop has sanitizing wipes so you can wipe down these dirty carts if you get squeamish thinking about germs.
5. Black and White Board Books – these are meant for newborns since newborns see best in black, white, and red. However, my newborn was always too busy sleeping, eating, crying, or pooping to pay much attention to these books. They don’t come with words either, just images. By the time Baby HH was more alert, she was ready for more interesting books like Brown Bear Brown Bear and Moo Baa La La La!
6. Carter’s Receiving Blankets – I registered for these before I knew about Muslin wraps like Aden + Anais. These are small and I found they did not work well as swaddles. I suppose you can use them as burp cloths, but Gerber Prefolds are better for that. And I guess you can also cut them up into squares and turn them into cloth diaper wipes. But in their original form, I find these receiving blankets pretty useless.
7. Mobywrap – A very popular newborn carrier, but I found the length of the wrap cumbersome. Every time I tried to put it on, one end would drag on the floor. I really didn’t like that. I just imagined trying to put this thing on in a dirty parking lot somewhere while I kept my crying baby waiting in the car seat. I also had the Ergo, so once I got the hang of that (snap snap and you’re done!)… I never looked back and the Mobywrap remained tucked away in the closet along with the dust mites.
8. Baby K’tan – I actually really liked this wrap! It was much easier to put on that the Mobywrap, but it’s the same concept. There are so many ways you can wear baby in this thing. Alas, Baby HH hated it. She was just the type of baby that hated being confined in a tiny, curled up space. After trying the Mobywrap then this wrap, I gave up on wraps altogether and stuck to structured carriers.
9. Miracle Blanket – I have a feeling I’m going to get a lot of opposition on this one!! ;) I know moms who swear by it. There are tons of swaddle options out there, and this one comes highly highly rated. However, I was in no mood to pin down a squirming newborn and wrap their arms first then their whole body in this thing. I was a woombie user, and all I needed with the woombie was one-zip and done!
What were some of your registry regrets?
*ed. note: aftermarket products designed to be put into car seats are not recommended by car seat manufacturers as they have not been safety tested, and they may also void the warranty.

Have you used the ice cube tray with lid? I was thinking about getting that one.

This is really good to know. Registering is really overwhelming!

Item#1-I just used a regular ice cube tray and put plastic wrap over the top, didn’t know they make covered ice cube trays.
I also find item #2 to be a pain the rear- like you I couldn’t ever get it to stick on any table surface plus it takes up a good amount of real estate in the diaper bag. I resorted to either buying disposable place mats that stick to the table or just wiping the table down with a couple of pacifier wipes.
I don’t recall registering for item #6 but received them from friends/family. I too don’t find them useful as an actual blanket but loved throwing a couple in the diaper bag to use as a changing pad while out and about when I didn’t have my actual changing pad or the location I was changing DD wasn’t easily accommodating to my changing pad.
I agree about #7, the length of fabric is cumbersome and while I wrapped at home before leaving for the store so all I had to do was position DD when we arrived, found that no matter how hard I tried, the ends always ended up dirty/covered in dog or cat hair (we have both).

We have the summer infant tiny diner. It worked well for our son. Even when we ate a restaurant with tables that didn’t work with the suction, he never tried to lift it off the table. My daughter however is a lot more rambunctious so we haven’t used it much with her.

I love the Tiny Diner! We use it all the time. I havent found any tables it wont stick to (yet,) but that said I wet the suctioon cups before I stick them and it always works.
We have 2 of the Beaba trays and havent used them once. Liv skipped purees so those were a waste of money
I love the floppy seat cover (I have the same one in the photo.) Im sure Liv would be fine without it, but I cant do it. I see the people in our supermarkets, and even with the wipes, I wouldnt do it. She is also still putting EVERYTHING in her mouth, so thats why.
The rest of them I agree with

My LO hates the K’tan and I received the cart cover as a gift but I haven’t used it yet. I don’t think I want to carry it around and the sanitizing wipes will be enough for me!

I love this post! I almost like it more than the “ultimate registry” ones. It’s nicely explained in terms of why items didn’t work for you.

– Moby (LO hated it)
– Swing (LO hated it)
– Bouncy chair (LO hated it)
LOL.

Moby is definitely on my list. My son was 9 lbs 14 oz and 23 inches at birth and every position just squashed the crap out of him. I wish I would have gotten one of the soft side carriers instead.

@regberadaisy – yes, i have 2 sets of those ice cube trays with lids. i posted that in my ultimate baby registry. i like how the lids allow me to stack them neatly in my fridge too. the only issue i had with them is these particular ones are really rigid, so sometimes it was a challenge getting the cubes out.
@boogiebea – maybe that’s what i need to try – add water to the suctions! but we also had the fisher-price booster seat so we took that with us everywhere for restaurants and it comes with it’s own tray – http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000DEW8N/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=hellobee-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0000DEW8N
@livsmama – i liked the floppy seat cover at first and it was so cute too, but i think i just got lazy lugging an additional baby item around.
@grace – thank you!!
@rubies – haha, i purposely left off things like bouncers and swings from this list because every baby is sooo different when it comes to them. my baby hated them too!!! it was a waste of real estate in our house, so luckily ours were hand-me-downs or borrowed.

Moby is on my list as well!!!!! I never got A&A blankets so the shorter version are okay for us, but I know I’m missing out on something great.
We also have#2 and never used it. #3 a friend lent it to us, again never used it.

Probably my bebe pod. Lo barely used it. Hoping baby 2 likes it though!

So hilariously, the Beaba tray is on my #1 top gift to new-moms-to-be because not only can you use it for baby food…but it is by far the best freezing tray I have ever used for things like: pesto, the rest of the chicken stock that is in the box that never gets used, ditto with tomato paste, etc. The key to this being the best tray I’ve used, and really I’ve used a LOT, is that it is made of silicone and it has a bubble, which makes pushing the food out sooooo much easier than an ice cube tray. In my humble-I’m-not-a-foodie-but-I-do-like-to-cook opinion. I’m just so surprised that you would find an ice cube tray so much easier that this is on the not-worth-registering-for list. Ironically, I’ve rarely used mine for baby food since we BLW’d both kids
The Moby is so polarizing. I loved mine and both of my children were 10+ lbs at birth, AND I’m a big girl and no squishing baby syndrome here. It seems to be where I live and among the moms that I have heard rave or rant about the Moby, that the more committed you are about actual baby wearing, as opposed to baby-carrying, the more likely you are to like the Moby and any other of the many swath-of-fabric like carrier options there are.
Lastly, we received SO MANY of the gerber/carters flannel swaddling blankets. The best thing I ever did with them was cut them with pinking shears into small squares and have my three year old use them as tissues. It solved the raw-nose-all-winter effect immediately.

I totally agree with the miracle blanket, although it came highly recommended. My baby didn’t really break out of swaddles, though, so all the wrapping was overkill for us. I love numbers 4 and 5. While I have no problem with LO in the hard cart or restaurant high chair, I’m creeped out by the filthy cloth seatbelts on carts and high chairs. I’m sure they’re fine, but they make me cringe enough that I don’t mind carrying the extra gear
And at 9 months my LO still likes b&w books and has been interested in them since she was tiny – maybe because we make the animal noises or make up little stories to go with the pictures?

my baby hated the miracle blanket. I very dissapointed with it.
However I do plan to buy the shopping cart cover. The sanitizer wipes arent always available plus they leave the cart kinda wet/damp and dont always do agood job of cleaning it thoroughly and after working in a supermarket I know how much abuse thes carts get and wouldnt want to put my baby directly in it

ty for this list! taking notes!

#3 for us, as well. Sad.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
I’m also a tiny diner lover! It sticks 95% of the time when we go out, and if it doesn’t (sometimes there’s a table cloth or something) I just lay it on top and it’ll lay flat enough that my LO doesn’t even notice.
I also used the shopping cart cover when my LO wasn’t so sturdy sitting up. Made me feel better if she started to topple over.
I’m most sad about my baby bjorn. My LO didn’t love it and I didn’t either.
apricot / 290 posts
I dont think I could have lived without the snuzzler, but only because LO was so little that she just slumped down in her bouncy chair, so it helped (a lot) to keep her more upright. We were also able to use our stroller sooner because of the snuzzler.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
My baby is a swaddler! although we didn’t use the miracle blanket – I’m sure we would have loved it because the swaddle we do with our A&A blanket is similar to the style a miracle blanket does.
5. We don’t have the black and white books, but we did get an Indestructibles and though they don’t have words, I think it’s great for a kids imagination to make up a different story each time.
I didn’t register for receiving blankets- useless in my mind too!! The ones I got as hand-me-downs I did cut up into cloth wipes. They work great.
And I would have DIED without my moby!! I feel like it is a hit or miss. But my baby loved being carried and this things saved my life.
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
We used the snuzzler for our preemie and it was a lifesaver in the beginning because everything was so huge compared to him. However now that he’s bigger he hates it so I can see why most babies wouldn’t like it.
pear / 1946 posts
My LO loves her Boba wrap (similar to moby but more stretchy). She’s fussy/colicky so it was recommended as a way to soothe her and it definitely works. It does hurt my back after a while though and can’t see using it when shr gets bigger.
I don’t have a problem w the receiving blankets. I use them for tummy time or shading the cars eat or stroller. I never meant to use them for swaddling.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Coastinganon – those are great tips for the beaba tray! i still have mine in the cabinet collecting dust so i will try it out for soup stock and things like that – thank you! i also did baby led weaning, but didn’t start til my LO was 7-months so for a month i was pureeing and the ice cube trays were the perfect amount for my little eater.

It’s so funny to see how different every parent/baby’s experience is… we LOVED the Snuzzler (#3)! Granted, we really only needed it for about a month but I thought it was worth it because I never had to worry about our LO’s head flopping around in the car seat.
#5 – Our DS absolutely loved this board book! We would prop it open in the crib in front of him while he did tummy time and it really encouraged him to push himself up so he could see the images.
#7 – Sadly, I’m not a fan of the Moby either. I really wanted it to work but it’s WAY too cumbersome… especially if you have a petite frame like me.
#9 – There’s no way we could have made it through the first 4 months without the Miracle Blanket! We occasionally used the HALO SleepSack too but I found the velcro got worn out in the wash really quickly.
I’d say our biggest registry regret was the swing (Fisher-Price My Little Snuggabunny). That thing was huge (and our house is tiny) and our son wasn’t a fan. Plus, he outgrew it in a flash.
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
I kept #6 rolled up with their original packaging thingies and used them to support baby S’s head in the car seat and to keep him off his flat spot in his swing. It was the only thing the police officer doing our car seat checks said we could use. I could have used anything, but these worked well

The Beaba freezer tray and Moby are two of my all time favorite baby items!!! We still use the Beaba tray now that my son is almost two, for a quick portion of (non-puréed) lentils and spinach or whatever, and we used the Moby many many many times every day when he was small. It definitely takes a little practice to get on, but once you’ve done it a few times, it’s soooo easy. That was the only way my son would nap for months!! I generally only wore it at home, or at least put it on at home before going out, so it didn’t drag on the ground when I was out anywhere, but he far preferred it to the Ergo when he was little (although we adore our Ergo too – and still use it now in fact!)
