It’s almost August and California’s been having wonderful weather all summer-long! It’s hot enough to go to the pool, but not uncomfortably hot where you just want to take cover and hide. Although we don’t have a pool in our backyard, we do live in a neighborhood that has a pretty nice community pool, including a wading pool (only 1-feet deep) for the little ones. We have been taking advantage of this beautiful weather by going every chance we get!
These are some of the essentials we always bring with us to the pool:
1. Baby Banz Sunglasses – I love these because the strap wraps all around Baby HH’s head and keeps it secure and in place. The lenses are also really big so I know they’re really protecting her eyes from the sun. She looks like such a little diva in them!
2. Water Shoes – We have these Speedo brand ones and they’re perfect for protecting little feet from the hot cement. They can also wear it into the water and helps prevent them from slipping.
3. i.Play Hat – We got this hat because of the extra sun protection (UPF 50+) it provides. It has a wide enough brim and has a chin strap to keep the hat in place.
4. Rash Guard Set – We recently got this adorable rash guard set to give Baby HH even more full body protection from the sun. Can’t go to the pool without some sort of swimsuit! Well… you can, but Mr. HH doesn’t like that.
5. California Baby SPF 30+ Sunblock – Must protect that delicate baby skin!! I’m always worried that she’ll come home looking like a lobster if we stay out too long. California Baby comes highly rated on the Skin Deep database so you can feel safe knowing you’re putting something non-toxic on your baby’s skin.
6. Terry Cover-Up – We love this cover-up and because it’s made out of terry cloth and is great at absorbing water. Super cute and it zips up the front so it’s really easy to put on and take off to keep Baby HH warm and cozy.
7. Lightspeed Quick Cabana – So this isn’t quite for the pool, but it’s great for the beach to protect the whole family from the sun!! I had to add it on here because I love this pop-up Cabana so much. It’s worth spending a little extra money for this one because you do not want to spend too much time trying to setup at the beach when you have impatient little munchkins running circles around you. It’s quick to setup and easy to break down. Highly recommend!
8. Hooded towel – Of course you can use any ol’ towel to bring to the pool, but these toddler sized towels are perfect for the little ones. I use the hood to dry off her hair first, then I quickly wrap the rest of the towel around her. How can you resist the cute animal designs?
9. Swimways Baby Spring Float – Love this float! It’s for kids up to 2-years old, and it comes with a shade so your LO is protected even in the water. It also comes with a few pool toys so your LO has plenty of things to play with while in the water.
What are your pool-time essentials? Do you agree/disagree with anything on this list?

Great list! I love that hooded towel. it’s adorable.
Unfortunately baby girl can’t go in the pool yet, but i’ll bookmark this for next year.

For older toddlers, we love our Puddle Jumper life jackets. They’re the only US Coast Guard approved life jackets for kids and the kids love them. We’ve tried the bigger life jackets and we could never get a good fit…my kids always seemed to sink into them no matter how tight we make it. The headrest always seemed to make my daughter pitch forward. The Puddle Jumpers always leave the kids either upright or on their backs. They can only go on their tummies if they actively try to.

I’m curious do your kiddos like the sunglasses? If so how old we’re they when you started using them? My almost 14 month old rips her hats off so I’m wondering if these sunglasses would be a good alternative.

i second the puddle jumper floaties! my daughter has always been scared of the water (will only go in if we’re holding her) regardless of which other type of floatie we put on her.
now she goes “swimming” by herself with all her friends. we’re all close by watching the kids, but it’s so great being able to let the kids swim often without having to go in yourself every time or worry about them flipping over.
