When it comes to outfitting my family, I like to base all outfits off the basics and work my way to the fun or trendy stuff from there. No matter what season or age, a great couple basics can be the perfect start to any outfit – especially when the basics themselves are not really that basic. When it comes to kids’ basics, they can be a bit tougher than they are for adults – sometimes the fit is really not right or changes with every buy, the style you love gets discontinued, or the colors are just blah.
Here are my favorite places to shop for the basics my kids wear almost everyday, and our most loved items from store.
no.1 – Tulip Tee: A sweet little basic tee in an array of cute colors, but with a subtle puffed shoulder to add some style.
no.2 – Comfy Cardi: A great unisex cardigan that is made in a jersey knit. So great as a thin layer in all seasons.
no.3 – Fresh Dress: The style is adorable and seasonless, comes in cute colors and is super durable for the active girly.
no.4 – Snug Pant: The perfect basic legging and it comes in lots of great colors.
American Apparel is a favorite basics shop for the whole family in our house. The kids’ basics are trendy but classic enough to buy every year. Also a lot of the items are either unisex (great for passing down to siblings) or can be worn in new ways as they grow to get the most for your dollar.
no.1 – Printed Legging: Leggings are a staple for my daughter, and I actually love them for boys too (especially as PJs). These come in fun, hip yet also still a bit basic patterns.
no.2 – Zip Hoodie: Such a basic item but so extra adorable on a little person. Basically this is the mini version to mom and dad’s hoodies.
no.3 – Pocket Romper: Basic but so versatile. Wear over a tee, over tights, add a belt, a pin – the basic style is great and the possibilities for wear are pretty endless.
no.4 – Skater Dress: I’m personally in love with this dress and wish it came in my size. The style is a no brainier and the amount of colors it comes it makes it easy to buy one with every growth spurt.
Ever/After is pretty new to me, but the styles offered are fantastic and they are all made in the softest pima cotton. They’re the type of basics mom and dad wear on a regular basis, and maybe have searched a few stores looking for the same items for the kids.
no.1 – V-Neck Tee: Finding this great basic V-neck was like a small ah-ha moment. Why are more stores not making a simple v-neck for kids? It’s so simple yet just the right amount of style-less style.
no.2 – Racer Back Tank: Why not outfit your little girl in the same standard tank you wear? It’s so cute and comes in great basic colors.
A few other places I like to stock up on basics are:
Old-Navy for boys’ basic play tees and girls’ tights.
H&M for jeans; I’m always shocked at how well they fit and the awesome price.
The Gap for girls’ tights.
Do you have a favorite basics shop? Or a favorite basics item you buy new for your kids every time they grow out of the old one?

We buy alot of clothes from Carter’s since we can get such great deals and they are soft and well-made. Gap is another favorite.

Over half of my girls clothes are Joe Fresh, which I think is only Canadian. Cheap and stylish, just what I need in kids clothes!

@Mrs. Superhero: They have a Joe Fresh in New York now! Since last fall. I love me some joe fresh too. Too bad they don’t have so many sales. But a good chunk of both my kids waredrobe is from there.
I also buy a lot from children’s place because of all the sales + additional coupons. I’m all for stretching every dollar.

@tipperella: We don’t have Carter in my province yet, but heard from a store in Ottawa that they will open a store come next year.
I’m so excited, Michaels, Carters, Victoria Secret, Crate & Barrel, Anthropologie and TARGET are all opening in Quebec come 2013. That’s without the premium outlets making it’s 2nd debut in Canada in 2015. (right next to my house)
