As I mentioned in Charlie’s 24 Month Update, I think he’s ready to get serious about potty training. He often tells us when he has to poop, when he’s pooping, and after he’s pooped. He also loves the two potty books he has, and wants to sit on his potty after he reads them. We just need to find some time to stay home and really concentrate on potty training all day. We already have the potties, but these are some of the best accessories that may help us with potty training!
1) Summer Infant Deluxe Piddle Pad – We don’t have a car, but if we did we’d get one of these to protect our car seat.
2) Blueberry Training Pants – These training pants absorb pee from leaking (though they’re not for naps or overnight), but they also remain wet inside so your child knows that they peed. Often the problem with training diapers are that they’re too absorbent and similar to regular diapers. I think these are too pricey to buy a bunch while potty training, but it’d be nice to have a couple on hand for daycare and outings. The rest of the time Charlie will probably be in regular underwear when he’s at home while potty training.
3) Looster Booster – Charlie prefers his BabyBjorn potty ring that fits over the toilet, but he can’t get up there by himself. The Looster Booster wraps around the toilet, making it sturdy for toddlers. And it’s easier to poop when you can press your feet down on a solid surface!
4) Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day – I hope this works because we don’t have much more than a weekend to really focus on it all day!
5) Aqueduck Bathroom Faucet Extender – This nifty little gadget helps kids reach the faucet water.
6) Forsiktig Stool – Your child is going to need a stool to reach the faucet, and this inexpensive one from Ikea works just fine.
7) Sesame Street Potty Training Rewards Kit – Rewards are a big part of potty training success for most parents. Reward kits come in many different character styles, but you can just as easily make your own!
8) Potty Hook – We have this on the side of our toilet to hang up our BabyBjorn Toilet Trainer.
9) Elmo’s Potty Time – Since Charlie loves all things Sesame Street, this dvd is sure to get him excited about potty training.
10) Prince of the Potty – This is a new book in the children’s potty training book genre. Charlie just received it for his birthday, and he got so excited that he peed in his potty while reading it! We also own the The Potty Book for Boys which Charlie loves reading lately.
11) Method Mickey Mouse Foaming Hand Wash in Lemonade – I’ve found foaming hand soaps to create the least mess when it comes to letting Charlie wash his own hands. This one from Method has an adorable Mickey Mouse shape, and Charlie just loves lemons!

We used pullups, even though most people say they feel just like diapers my daughter understood the difference. She hated to wet her pullups. It was a lot easier then changing clothes 6 times a day and cleaning up the floor when she had an accident while watching a 4 month old. I did let her go one weekend with no panties, I just put baby legs and a shirt on her. After that it was pretty simple to potty train her. She was set in about 2 weeks. She’s still not night time trained but her pediatrician told me to wait until her diapers are dry a few nights in a row before I start.

I bought my son 9 pairs of Gerber’s training underwear. The extra thickness in the middle helps with the mess if I find him right away. Sometimes, I just need to change his undies. I also got the Bjorn toilet ring. Just bought a second to put in his bathroom so I don’t have to clean up afterwards. Although, unfortunately, he hasn’t pooped yet… I also just ordered two of the summer infant car seat inserts and we also have the method hand soap. I love the method hand soap b/c it doesn’t pump too much soap which the regular foam soaps does. And it’s cute! Good luck with potty training. I started three days ago and the first official day for me was a nightmare… Third day is good but still no poop. And I use marshmallow and stickers as rewards. Yes, I give him two rewards for pee and then a “happy pee pee dance” in which we hold hands and dance around. He loves it! He gets double of each when he poops AND a trip to the basement which he hasn’t gone to since he hasn’t pooped. I know, mean…but I haven’t thought of anything better for now!

Just and FYI – the car seat piddle pads you posted are not safe for use in car seats. ANY after market products that go between the baby and the carseat or between the baby and the harness are not safe for use. They can affect how the baby sits in the seat and how the harness works. They can also void car seat warranties and affect insurance claims following an accident. They also don’t necessarily have the same flammability rating. I know every parent has to make these choices for themselves, but I wanted to put it out there for moms who might not have researched car seat safety.

I’m EC’ing my LO (not full-time though) and I find it helpful to have flushable wipes like Cotonelle (although I actually prefer the Costco brand) on hand so I don’t accidentally flush a baby wipe and clog my pipes.

@Red: i wish we had the discipline to ec. i’ve heard it’s awesome!

@Mrs. Bee: I’m not super disciplined at it right now. Just taking her to the toilet in the morning when she wakes and during the day when I see her “push” face. Will ramp it up when she can walk confidently and when she starts signing more. Hopefully, she’ll be potty-trained some time before 24 months but if not, I won’t sweat it.
BTW, maybe EC’ing is something you can add to your Nanny questions?

I’m going to try EC’ing as well & we’re cloth diapering, too. I’ve heard that since baby can feel that they are wet, they are more inclined to potty train faster. I don’t have any plan in place at the moment beyond those things, though.
