I got so depressed about my milk supply this past week. I worked really hard to increase my supply with Charlie, but like with most things parenting, I think I forgot just how hard it was the first time around. Maybe I got cocky because I was able to increase my supply so much last time, I thought it wouldn’t be that hard to do it again. I started taking More Milk Plus recently, but I wasn’t doing much more than that. And since I first posted about trying to increase my supply 11 days ago, it’s actually decreased slightly!
To increase your supply, you have to make sure your breasts are empty often. But trying to balance both breastfeeding and pumping has been really a real challenge. Most people trying to increase their supply pump every 2 hours — that’s 2 hours from when you last started to pump. But I’ve found that Olive doesn’t get full if it’s only been 2 hours since I last pumped, so it’s been really difficult to squeeze in extra pumping sessions. I’ve been pumping and nursing around 8 times a day, but I remember I had to bump it up to at least 10 times a day to start seeing an increase in my milk supply.
I was stressed out, and that only made my milk supply decrease even further. I have no extra milk right now, so I can’t leave Olive except for very brief periods unless we give her formula. I really don’t want to supplement since she’s so little, I feel like she really needs the breastmilk. I have absolutely nothing against formula — it’s just that I’ve been able to provide her with exclusive breastmilk up until now, and I’d like to keep going.
I knew I needed to redouble my efforts and even posted on the boards to see what worked for other mamas who successfully increased their supply. Just taking More Milk Plus like I did last time wasn’t going to cut it. The mamas had some great tips, and I was remotivated! This is my new plan of action:
– Take More Milk Plus Alcohol-free Tincture 4 times a day (the alcohol one tastes like crap, and the pills may be easier to take)
– Take 6 capsules of Blessed Thistle/day
– Take 9 capsules of Fenugreek/day
– Drink 3 cups of Mother’s Milk Tea/day
– Stay obscenely hydrated. I carry a glass of cucumber water with me everywhere and force myself to drink it all day long.
– Pump every 2 hours except before breastfeeding (my goal is 10x/day)
– Power pump a couple times a week – stimulate cluster feeding by pumping on and off for every 10 minutes for an hour
I had a brand new bottle of Blessed Thistle from my Charlie days so I started taking that last night, along with Fenugreek and Mother’s Milk Tea. I also drank 2 bottles of nonalcoholic beer. Anecdotally a lot of moms believe beer increases your milk supply, but recent studies have shown that it has no impact. Since it was nonalcoholic though, I figured it couldn’t hurt. I’m not sure what worked since I tried a little bit of everything, but for the first time last night I saw a slight increase!
Typically you see the effects of supplements within the first 2 weeks, so I will keep you guys updated. Making more milk is no easy task, but I’m committed!

Congrats! I can’t even imagine how stressful that was.

Good luck! I remember being really stressed about not producing enough milk for my LO too. I actually had to supplement with about 2-4 ounces of formula a day for the first month because I wasn’t producing enough. Felt really blah about it, but my mom told me not to stress and that giving formula to a baby was OK–tons of women exclusively feed their babies formula and they turn out fine.
Thankfully my milk came in full force after a month of supplementing and pumping after each feeding.
I keep myself obscenely hydrated too and am still going strong at 7+ months!
Will send happy milk producing thoughts your way!
I have a friend who took a few sips of really dark beer and she said her milk increased like crazy. I forget what it was called, but hers had alcohol in it.

Sorry to hear about your supply. I know you’re not against formula, but maybe you could supplement a little while you try to get your supply back up so that Olive can nurse and you can pump to build up supply. Or just nurse her exclusively on demand until your supply is back up and then start building supply again. I remember I wasn’t able to even build up supply except for the month that I had to pump exclusively while we tried to figure out why my son had eczema head to toe. That was the only supply I had and I just nursed my son exclusively the entire time with supplement in the beginning. Sucked but I think I’m not just a huge milk producer. I guess we’ll see when we have #2. I have a feeling it’ll be the same; but at least I have the knowledge to start earlier in helping my supply increase. Good luck! I’m sure you’ll be able to build it back up again.

Wishing you the very best and hoping your supply increases!
Have you ever tried hand expression? Possibly the old school method could help extract the milk better than pumping? I hand express after pumping when I have a minor clogged duct, and it works rather well.

What kind of pump are you using? Perhaps it might be worth it to rent a hospital grade pump for a while? I think it’s better for emptying your boobs. I was told at the hospital that especially with a preemie that I needed to pump after feeding too because baby couldn’t draw out enough milk to build up my supply. Maybe you could try that… it also ensure that you aren’t pumping right before Olive wants to eat! =)

@tyffaknee – i rented a hospital grade pump with charlie, and i didn’t see any difference. i also pump after i breastfeed to make sure i get every drop!
@yin – that sounds like a lot of work! i like to blog while pumping wearing my hands-free bra.

Good luck! It sounds like you are trying the all the right things. Too bad a hospital grade pump didn’t work for you. Friends of mine who had issues said that was their saving grace.

@bee: a lot of work indeed… that is why I primarily just pump. I use my hands-free bra too!

Good luck…I know Olive is very proud of all your efforts to provide her with breastmilk. It really shows your commitment and love to her.

i found that pumping after every time i nursed helped boost my supply. oatmeal helps, too! don’t forget to eat–i think i read that your body needs 500 extra calories a day when nursing!

Chinese swear by papaya & fish soup. It’s really easy to make and also goes well with rice for a nice meal. If you don’t have time, eating papaya or fish alone will work too. Chop up papaya into chunks and throw into pot of water. Debone a white fish like tilapia and lightly pan fry. Put fish in a food net to keep fish together and put in the water with papaya. This also keeps bones from getting into soup. Once water boils lower to a simmer. Simmer for 2-3 hrs or until papaya is soft. Take fish out and separate any remaining bones and toss fish into soup. Enjoy! My kids love this savory sweet soup too.

Hi bee, I am trying to increase milk supply too. It is my 5th day post partum,. My milk came in yesterday but I did not get engorged at all. Get this, I already have clogged ducts!!! I have been staying hydrated and taking More Milk Plus pills since Day 1 but it seems to be in vain ……
May I understand why you are taking Blessed Thistle and Fenugeek capsules on top of More Milk Plus?
I think I am going to try your regime and get Mother’s Milk Tea and try power pumping.
I have to admit that I have not been very vigilant about pumping 8x a day …. I’m trying … Between.spending time with my active 29 month old and twice daily trips to the NICU, any sleep that I can get is my #1 priority …..

@josie267 – mmp alone wasn’t increasing my supply and i’ve heard that adding blessed thistle and fenugreek can help, even though mmp has blessed thistle and fenugreek in it.
i started trying to increase my supply after charlie was 1 month old, so the fact that you’re keeping up your supply so early is a good thing!
so far i have seen an increase when i pump at night, but not so much in the day. i can get up to 4 oz/session when i started at 2 1/2 oz.
all the supplements seem to have helped, but it’s also important to stay super duper hydrated. like force yourself to drink obscene amounts of water. good luck!

Thanks for your inputs bee. I ordered Mothers Milk Tea last night so I will give it a try once it gets here.
Currently, I’m pumping 4x a day, 30mins each session with constant massaging. The yield is between 1.5 to 2.5oz /session.
I am not sure if I’ll make enough for my twins but I’m ok about supplementing. With my older daughter, I was a LVP and supplemented with formula as well.
Will most defintely keep your increase supply regime in mind if MMP, Mothers Milk Tea and drinking obscene amounts of water does not help

@josie267 – you’re ~1 week postpartum so it takes time to build up your milk supply. What you are experiencing is normal.
The demand your body experiences the first 4-6 weeks is what lays the foundation for your supply, so either nurse on demand or pump regularly.
Also, in the beginning when my milk came in (~4d ppm) I was engorged but the pump wasn’t effective at getting the milk out (less than half an ounce after an hour of pumping). Later a nurse hand expressed the milk out (2 ounces in less than 10 minutes!). It was painful, but I was much more comfortable afterwards, and then pumping was much more effective because I wasn’t as swollen.

Hm, I might need to try some more than the MoreMilk Plus, because that does not seem to be helping yet and it’s been about a week.

Thanks mrsnarbonne! I can’t nurse on demand as my twins are preemies in NICU but I’m trying to increase the number of pumping sessions to 6x per day.

korean oxtail soup or any kind of gomtang would increase my supply within a few hours. snacks are important too. you need the calories and the fats so i would eat an ice cream sandwich in the afternoon. also, sleep is essential. i always had better sessions after a good nap, which was almost never. haha. and of course, keep up with the pumping. i used a hospital grade pump for the entire 7 months i pumped. it took me about 3 months to reach my peak supply by pumping every 3 hours for 15 min. i was able to get up to producing 40oz a day, enough to establish a decent surplus, but it was all built on pumping as often as i could. if i started to slip and go longer between sessions, my supply would start to drop instantaneously.
